Addressing Global Crisis – WHO’s Urgent $1.5 Billion Appeal for Vulnerable Populations in 41 Emergencies in 2024

In a decisive move today, the World Health Organization (WHO) initiates a critical appeal for $1.5 billion to protect the health of the most vulnerable populations facing 41 emergencies worldwide in 2024. The appeal, targeting over 87 million people, responds to complex crises fueled by conflict, climate change, and economic instability, giving rise to displacement, hunger, and inequality.

WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, underscores the life-and-death significance of health services in emergencies, emphasizing the crucial role they play, from aiding mothers giving birth in conflict zones to providing essential care for young children in drought-affected regions and supporting individuals undergoing cancer treatment or dialysis.

The appeal aims to facilitate life-saving healthcare, the distribution of critical health supplies and equipment, and the maintenance of essential health services to ensure uninterrupted care. The funding will directly enable access to healthcare in hard-to-reach areas through partnerships with local organizations and bolster effective response measures to monitor, share information, and document outbreaks and attacks on health workers. Additionally, there will be a focus on maintaining existing healthcare systems and building resilience against future threats.

Highlighting the positive impact of funding, the appeal underscores that every $1 invested in WHO delivers a remarkable return on investment of at least $35. The breakdown of the requested funds allocates $334 million to the African Region, $705 million to the Eastern Mediterranean Region, $183 million to the European Region, $15.2 million to the Western Pacific Region, $49 million to the South-East Asia Region, and $131 million to the Americas Region.

Dr. Tedros expresses gratitude for the support received in 2023, emphasizing that the solidarity and backing of the international community are more crucial than ever as WHO strives to save lives, address critical health needs, and empower communities to navigate future health threats in 2024.
