A man named Jason Carter, 39 years old and from Haiku, Hawaii, tragically lost his life over the weekend due to injuries sustained in a “shark encounter” while surfing. The incident occurred at Paia Bay off the beach area of 93 Hana Highway on Saturday around 11:19 a.m. Local authorities, specifically Ocean Safety Officers, swiftly responded by bringing Carter to shore using a jet ski.
Once on the beach, first responders tried to save his life before transferring him to Maui Memorial Medical Center. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, Jason Carter later succumbed to his injuries. The exact nature of the injuries has not been disclosed at this time, and an ongoing investigation is in progress. The Maui Police Department, handling the case categorized as a “miscellaneous type incident,” has not provided immediate clarification on specific details of the encounter.
In response to the tragic incident, Baldwin Beach Park and Baby Beach, near the location of the shark encounter, were closed on the same day. Shark warning signs were also placed along the beaches one mile on either side of Paia Bay, according to Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources.
Jason Carter, prior to moving to Hawaii, had worked several seasons at ski resorts in Oregon and Colorado, as indicated by his Facebook profile. Friends on social media remembered him as an accomplished outdoorsman who loved what he did. The loss of Jason Carter was deeply felt by those who knew him, with one friend expressing, “A legend was lost yesterday, doing what he loved!” and another mourning, “Oh man. Another amazing friend and an amazing person gone. Jay Carter rest easy my friend.”
