Main Line Health Implements Mandatory Face Mask Policy Across All Locations for Next Two Weeks

Date:

Main Line Health, a healthcare provider with hospitals and medical facilities in several southeastern Pennsylvania counties, has decided to bring back the rule of wearing face masks. They’re doing this because there’s a notable increase in cases of COVID-19, flu, and RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus).

Starting at 7 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 4, Main Line Health is making it mandatory for everyone—patients, staff, medical personnel, and visitors—to wear masks in clinical and common areas at all their locations. If someone doesn’t have a mask, the healthcare system will provide one upon arrival.

Dr. Brett Gilbert, Main Line Health’s chief of infectious disease, explained that this step is crucial to protect everyone entering the hospitals, including patients and healthcare workers. The hospital has been closely monitoring cases of flu, COVID-19, and RSV in the community, and all three are increasing, posing a threat to the healthcare system.

Gilbert mentioned that after the holidays, there’s usually a spike in respiratory illnesses due to large gatherings. He predicts that in the next two to four weeks, the numbers will rise even further. The hospital uses three parameters to assess the situation: patients with respiratory illnesses, CDC data, and local wastewater, and all three have shown a significant increase recently.

People in the community are supportive of the new mask mandate, understanding the need to protect themselves and others. Some residents mentioned that they wish they had started wearing masks sooner, realizing the importance of preventive measures.Main Line Health has emphasized that the mask mandate is initially for two weeks, but it could be extended if the number of cases remains high. The requirement applies to all Main Line Health hospitals and medical facilities, including well-known locations like Lankenau Medical Center, Bryn Mawr Hospital, and Paoli Hospital.
