“US Education Official Tariq Habash Steps Down Amid Controversy Surrounding Biden’s Stance on Israel-Gaza Conflict”

Date:

A high-ranking official in the US Education Department resigned on Wednesday, expressing dissatisfaction with President Joe Biden’s approach to the conflict in Gaza. This move reflects growing dissent within the administration amid increasing casualties in the war.

On the same day, 17 Biden re-election campaign staff members issued an anonymous letter warning that the president might lose voters due to the Gaza issue. Tariq Habash, a special assistant in the Education Department, resigned citing the administration’s disregard for what he termed as atrocities against innocent Palestinian lives.

Habash, a Palestinian-American and a student debt expert, had been appointed early in Biden’s presidency to strengthen the Education Department’s knowledge on student loans. The 17 anonymous campaign staffers, in their Medium-published letter, urged Biden to call for a ceasefire in Gaza, expressing concerns about volunteers quitting and long-time Democratic voters feeling uncertain. The Biden campaign has not responded to requests for comments. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller stated that the US hasn’t observed acts in Gaza constituting genocide. This comes as South Africa initiates proceedings at the International Court of Justice over Israel’s military operations in Gaza. Both Israel and the US deny claims of genocide in Gaza.
