“Outbreak of Legionnaires’ Disease Linked to Mountain View Grand Resort”

Date:

Two people got sick after staying at a hotel in New Hampshire. One person died, and the other is in the hospital. The New Hampshire health department warned about it. The sick individuals were from Rhode Island and Massachusetts. The health officials are trying to find out where they got infected.

The hotel, Mountain View Grand Resort and Spa, said on Facebook that the state couldn’t confirm where the people got sick. The hotel is working with health services to figure out if the guests got infected when they visited in the fall of 2023. The hotel says it’s committed to guests’ well-being and is following safety protocols while waiting for test results.

Legionnaires’ disease is a severe pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria. The bacteria spread through tiny water droplets in places like hot tubs, air conditioning systems, and drinking water. Most cases happen randomly, but outbreaks can occur, especially in big places like hotels.

Symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease include headaches, muscle aches, shortness of breath, cough, and fever. It can be severe, needing hospitalization, and sometimes fatal. The health department hasn’t shared many details about these cases, but the CDC says it often affects adults over 50, especially those with certain health conditions.

Pontiac fever is a milder form with symptoms like fever and muscle aches, but no pneumonia. If someone shows pneumonia symptoms, they should see a doctor and mention exposure to Legionella, hot tub use, recent travel, or hospital stays in the last two weeks.
